What is the value of the King's Gambit ?

Hello,

Is it a good opening or is there a good refutation that can make your lose immediately ?

I guess 1500/1700 elo players don't have all these notions about openings and maybe it's interesting to play it in bullet/blitz ?

Because nobody plays it and I suppose that the reason is that it is just a trap and not a good opening.

Thank you
Busted is an exaggeration for sure.
It's very playable up to a high level however if your opponent really knows what he's doing in the opening you might end up with a slightly worse position.
If black will do 5-7 moves correctly...That white will struggle for a draw. For example in the Fisher Defense white is in big trouble. And at least another 3 ways to impede white game.
Kings gambit is a good opening with a bad reputation
In all main lines white scores well and this is a strong indicator
One huge downside though is that if you play the kings gambit you have to be prepared for an irrational fight being often material down, and this is not to everyone's taste, especially super Gms who mostly strive to be consistent.
And btw, as far as I know no refutation exists, and engines have many problems realising white's compesation in king's gambit, so if you see your engine screaming -/+ 0.80 at move 5 dont necessarily trust it
Having said all that, if you want to learn chess its better to play the ruy, this is my opinion, but of course do what you enjoy more
The upside to playing the KG, it seems to me, is that most people will try to refute it. This is every KG player's dream; you're worse for 15 moves and then you win and your opponent wonders what just happened. The downside is that they don't *have* to do this. If black wants to play it simple, not know too much theory, and still (I would argue) equalize, there is always the Cunningham defense. Here's a study I started on the Cunningham a while ago after making a post on the forum asking what I should be doing against it:

I still play the KG sometimes just to not fall behind on tactics practice, though. That being said, I'm still a patzer, so you probably shouldn't listen too much to me!
Busted? Ha!

Go for it uxe play this romantic, fun and tactical opening .

f the haters (who are mostly 1.d4 players)
In the King's Gambit, after 3. Nf3, according to GMs and real engines (which are not your engines running on your laptop for 20 minutes) white is lost with perfect play . You still can play it obviously since very few people play perfectly
@pita96 show me the results of the real engines, I am always willing to learn. Or just the source of what you are saying, because I have a feeling you are pulling all this stuff out of... you know where :)
