Just cause they don't have hundreds of biotech companies doesn't mean that the people working there aren't very capable - China has shown a lot of aptitude with CRISPR and genetic sequencing. The scientists working there are I'm sure some of the brightest in the country, and they trained in France - and had direct partnership with many US firms.
