How about instead of dragging the pieces to drop them you could also fetch them by using keyboard shortcuts? For instance
a pawn
s rook
d knight
f bishop
g queen.

If there were keyboard shortcuts, They should be named after the first letter of the pieces (with N for knight) so:
R = rook
Q = queen
B = bishop
N = knight
K = king

@imakitty I suggested the shortcuts because you wouldnt have to lift your left hand from the keyboard to reach them, which you right hand operates the mouse.

However, you suggestion will make remembering the shortcuts more easily.

Another idea would be to have a release shortcut, so if you have pressed a and you have a pawn, then by pressing the release button the pawn goes back in the stock.

What about left-handed players who use a mouse with their left hand?

I'd like if clicking on an empty square summoned a "drop" wheel similar to how a promotion move summons a promotion wheel.
